There's a reason you feel calmer after singing

Two things happen when you sing or hum. Your vocal cords vibrate, and your out breath gets longer than your in breath. Both stimulate the vagus nerve, which runs the parasympathetic side of your nervous system, the side that settles you. The measurable version is heart rate variability. In a 2002 study humming raised HRV compared with normal breathing. One monitored study found humming produced a lower stress index than physical activity, emotional stress or sleep. Being honest about the evidence: this is a modest body of research, mostly small studies. The mechanism is well understood, the size of the effect is not settled. Which may be why a room full of people singing together has been part of worship for a very long time, without anyone needing to measure it.
