Wed 8/19 — Carrying everything and still feeling invisible

Some of the most capable leaders I have worked with quietly believe they are invisible. They carry more than anyone on the team. They catch what others miss. They hold the whole thing together on the hard weeks. And they still walk away feeling tolerated rather than genuinely respected. It is a strange and specific ache. From the outside, this person is clearly valued. Inside, the value never quite lands, because they are measuring it against a standard they never consciously set. Underneath, something specific is usually true. A leader who has to work this hard to feel seen often learned, earlier in life, that being useful was how you earned a place. So they keep over-delivering, and the recognition keeps not filling the space it was meant to fill, because the space was never really about recognition. The shift is not doing more or asking for more credit. It is stopping the habit of outsourcing your sense of standing to how loudly other people acknowledge it.
