Fri 8/14 — The leader who loses more energy after the meeting

A lot of senior leaders lose more energy after the meeting than during it. The meeting ends. The decision gets made. And then a capable executive spends the evening replaying it. Rewording what they said. Rereading the email before they send it, then reading it twice more. Wondering how one comment landed with one person. We do not usually count this as work. It is some of the most expensive time a leader spends. It runs in the background and quietly pulls focus off the decisions that actually deserve it. The part most people miss is that this is not a thinking problem you can solve by being more decisive. It is a protection habit. At some earlier point, this leader learned that a single misread moment could cost them, so the mind never fully closes the file on any exchange. You cannot out-discipline that. Telling someone to stop overthinking is like telling them to stop bracing for something their body still expects. The work is restoring the steadiness that lets a leader close the loop, trust how they handled it, and get the evening back. How much of your evening still belongs to conversations that already ended?
