Wed 9/16 — Competent from outside, performance from inside

There is a version of leadership that looks entirely competent from the outside and feels like performance from the inside. The meeting goes well and you spend the drive home auditing it. You know what you think, and you check who agrees before you say it. You lead a team that trusts you completely, and you privately wonder when somebody will notice you are not as certain as you appear. I want to name what that is, because it gets diagnosed wrong constantly. It is not a lack of ability. Nobody arrives in a senior role on the strength of pretending. What is happening is that the leadership is real and the ownership of it is not, and those two came apart somewhere earlier, in an environment where being right was never quite enough to make you safe. So a genuinely capable executive keeps looking outside herself for a confirmation that would settle it. It never settles, because the question was never really about competence. Leading without needing approval is not arrogance and it is not detachment. It is what becomes available when a leader's authority rests on her own judgment rather than on the room's reaction to it. When did you last make a call you were sure of, and let that be enough?
