Fri 9/18 — The tax nobody has on a report

The most expensive thing hesitation does to an organization does not appear on any report you have. A capable leader waits. Not on the large irreversible calls, where waiting is correct, but on the ordinary ones. The recommendation that gets one more review. The candidate who could have been offered the role on Thursday and hears three weeks later. The position that gets softened before anybody has pushed back on it. None of that registers as a mistake, so nothing flags it. What it produces is a slow tax on your leadership bench. The organization pays it in decision cycles that run long for no informational reason. It pays again in promotions that stall, because a leader who never quite claims her own judgment does not read as ready. And it pays a third time when someone genuinely capable plateaus, and the organization quietly concludes it misjudged them. It did not misjudge them. It never addressed the reason a highly competent person keeps waiting for a certainty that is not going to arrive. That reason is usually consistent. Somewhere earlier, trusting their own read carried a cost, and the caution stayed long after the environment changed. Where does a decision in your organization slow down for reasons that have nothing to do with information?
