R2 · The law that left food in the field

Save this one. There is an instruction in Leviticus that still stops me. "When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the foreigner. I am the LORD your God." Leviticus 19:9-10 Read who it is spoken to. Not the person in need. The person with the field. Generosity is built into the harvest itself, before anyone has to ask. A generation later, a widow from Moab walks into someone's field and picks up what the harvesters missed. The text does not say she was quoting the law. It just says, in its own wonderfully flat way, "As it turned out, she was working in a field belonging to Boaz." Make of that what you like. Scripture doesn’t fully explain it, and we are not going to explain it for scripture. Two small things the text actually says, since both get retold wrong. She stayed close to the women of Boaz, not to Boaz. And she gleaned through two harvests, barley and wheat. On the barley itself: a cooked cup carries about 6 g of fiber. If you want the cholesterol effect people talk about, that runs on roughly 3 g a day of its particular soluble fiber, as part of how you eat generally, not from one bowl.
