Wed 9/2 — "I avoid conflict even when I am the leader"

"I avoid conflict even when I am the leader." It is one of the more honest things a senior executive will say to me, and almost never out loud inside their own organization. From the outside that leader looks measured. Diplomatic. Slow to escalate. Those read as strengths, and often they are. What it produces further down is less flattering, and it is entirely measurable. Accountability conversations postponed until the quarter closes. A poor performer who stays eighteen months past the point everyone else knew. A team that quietly stops raising problems, because the response has become predictable. Then the part nobody says in the meeting. The team's respect starts moving toward whoever is willing to say the hard thing, whether or not that person has the judgment to be trusted with it. This is rarely a competence gap. Leaders who spent years in high-conflict environments learned that raising an issue carried a real cost, and they became genuinely excellent at avoiding that cost. The skill outlived the environment that required it. An organization that wants faster accountability does not need another workshop on difficult conversations.
