Melina Gray

Hi! You found me through Wholy & Well.

Melina

And you never even know they were there.

I work on getting more of those people to actually reach out.

I’m Melina Gray, a content strategist for professional firms, consultants and coaches. Before this, I ran marketing for a design-build firm for almost five years. I’m in the DC area and work with people anywhere in the US.

The kind of edit I make

A lot of sites are written to describe the firm. The person reading is trying to figure out if you can help with their specific problem, so I rewrite for that person. A few examples:

  1. Partnering with senior leaders through inflection points.I coach new VPs who are still doing their old job.
  2. Full-service solutions tailored to your needs. We do the books and taxes for family-owned restaurants.
  3. Click here to learn more.Tell me what's going on. I'll tell you where I'd start.

Made-up examples, not client copy.

The five questions I ask before I recommend anything

Honestly, writing more content usually isn’t where I’d start. I’d look at what happens to the people who already find what you’ve published. These are the questions I go through on every site:

  1. 1If someone searched for what you do, on Google or in ChatGPT, would you come up?
  2. 2When a referral lands on your homepage, can they tell you're the right person without you there to explain?
  3. 3Is there one clear next step, or a bunch of them?
  4. 4What happens to the people who aren't ready to reach out yet?
  5. 5Would you know any of this happened?

I’d start with number 3. It’s usually the quickest fix.

How I work

1

We talk.

You tell me what you’re trying to do and what’s not working. That first conversation doesn’t cost anything.

2

I look.

Before I recommend anything, I go through your site and content page by page. Then I show you what’s already working and where people are slipping through.

3

You pick.

You get a plan in phases, and every piece is priced on its own. I’ll tell you where I’d start and why. You can take one piece or all of it.

Depending on what I find, the plan might include things like:

  • Fixing the pages that matter most, so a referral knows what to do next
  • Getting found on Google and in AI answers like ChatGPT
  • Staying in touch with the people who aren't ready yet
  • LinkedIn or articles in your voice, or built around what you already write
  • A short monthly report so you can see what's working

Sometimes it’s something bigger, like turning years of articles into a book. Every piece is priced on its own, there are no packages, and anything ongoing is month to month.

What this work has done

A magazine feature that turned into a discovery call

I wrote a 1,000-word feature for a coaching client. A reader found it through a search, recognized her husband in the story, and signed him up for a discovery call.

A seven-figure contract that started with a contact form

When I ran marketing at a design-build firm, someone searched, found our site and filled out the contact form. Four meetings later, they signed a seven-figure contract.

The voice and approval process behind a coaching practice

For James Lewis’s coaching practice, I built the voice, the messaging and the way his team approves content. Coaching clients have signed off the back of it. He wrote about working with me on my LinkedIn, in his own words.

A few things you should know up front

  • You approve everything before it goes live.
  • I use my own logins, so I never need your password.
  • Everything I build is yours to keep.
  • Anything ongoing is month to month. Just give me 14 days’ notice to stop.
  • Projects are half up front, half when I deliver.

Tell me what you’re working on.

A sentence or two is plenty. I read every one myself and write back.
